Redefining What a Good Life Looks Like

I’ve been thinking a lot about where I am in life lately and what I really want for myself. The past few years have brought a lot of changes. I’m currently working part-time while focusing on my mental health and continuing to work on myself. Between my own struggles, my past experiences, and family issues, there’s been a lot to process. I’m still figuring things out, but I’m learning more about myself, setting boundaries, and understanding what I need to feel happier and more at peace.

I used to think that having a good, stable job was a big achievement. I pushed myself to go to grad school because I thought getting a master’s degree would give me more credibility, make my parents proud, and help me feel more on par with my peers. But even after all these years, I’ve never really landed the kind of high-paying, stable job that some of my peers have. I used to feel pretty small because of that, especially when I lived in the Bay Area, where it seemed like everyone had an advanced degree and worked in tech. After years of struggling with these feelings, I’m finally starting to ask myself: Why do I have to be like everyone else? The truth is, I’m not like everyone else, and I’m starting to realize that I don’t really want to be. I want to figure out what works for me instead of constantly measuring myself against other people.

I’m also realizing that I’m not particularly career-driven or money-driven. I want to be financially comfortable, but I don’t feel the need to keep chasing more just because that’s what people are expected to do. I’d rather have a balanced life where I have the time and energy to enjoy myself and spend time with people I care about.

I think this is also part of my journey as a 1.5-gen Taiwanese American. Growing up between two cultures has shaped how I see the world, but I’m still figuring out what matters most to me and what kind of life I want to build. I’m learning that I don’t have to follow a particular path or meet certain expectations just because they’re what others consider successful. At this stage, I just want to live a life that feels right for me, with meaningful relationships, personal freedom, and the space to be myself.
